QUEER-AFFIRMING THERAPY
How We Can Help
We provide individual and relationship counselling from therapists who either identify as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, or as allies, and deeply understand the unique experiences and challenges faced by queer individuals. In short, we get it! That’s why we have created a safe and LGBTQ+ affirming space where you can feel understood, validated, and supported on your journey toward healing and self-discovery.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy designed to help individuals regulate their emotions, form connections with others, and better cope with stress. For LGBTQ+ individuals, DBT is beneficial in addressing the unique stressors and emotional challenges they may face due to discrimination or identity-related issues. By learning skills to manage intense emotions and navigate interpersonal relationships, LGBTQ+ individuals can enhance their overall well-being and improve their relationships.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviours. This method can help LGBTQ+ individuals address internalized homophobia, transphobia, or other negative beliefs about their identity. By reframing these beliefs and developing healthier coping mechanisms, individuals can experience greater self-acceptance and boost self-confidence.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS is a therapeutic modality that explores the various “parts” of an individual’s psyche and aims to integrate them into a cohesive whole. For LGBTQ+ individuals, IFS can help navigate the complexity of identity formation, especially when facing societal or familial pressure to conform. By fostering self-compassion and understanding, IFS can support individuals in embracing all aspects of their identity.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT focuses on strengthening emotional bonds and creating secure attachments within relationships. In LGBTQ+ therapy, EFT can help couples or individuals address communication issues, rebuild trust, and navigate conflicts with ease.
Gottman Method
The Gottman Method is a therapeutic approach focusing on enhancing relationship dynamics through improved communication and conflict resolution skills. It provides a safe and LGBTQ+ affirming space to explore emotions, navigate relationship challenges, and foster healthier connections.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic approach centered on accepting one’s thoughts and feelings while committing to actions aligned with personal values. ACT supports LGBTQ+ folks by offering tools to explore and make sense of tough emotions, navigate societal pressures, embrace authentic identities, and cultivate resilience in the face of discrimination without internalizing it.
Art Therapy
Art therapy uses creative expression to facilitate emotional healing and self-exploration. This approach can support LGBTQ+ folks by providing a non-verbal outlet for processing complex feelings. By engaging in artistic activities, individuals can gain insight, express themselves authentically, and foster a sense of empowerment.
Holistic Counselling
Holistic counselling takes a comprehensive approach to the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ folks by addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health. This method supports individuals in developing self-care practices, improving self-esteem, and enhancing overall quality of life.
Transpersonal Psychology
Transpersonal psychology explores the spiritual dimensions of human experience and emphasizes interconnectedness and transcendence. This approach supports LGBTQ+ individuals in exploring questions of identity, purpose, and meaning beyond societal norms or expectations. By integrating spiritual and existential perspectives, individuals can find greater self-understanding and inner peace.
Compassionate & Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Compassionate and psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on exploring unconscious patterns, relational dynamics, and emotional wounds. These approaches can help LGBTQ+ individuals uncover and heal past traumas, navigate identity development, and cultivate self-compassion. By fostering a supportive therapeutic relationship, compassionate and psychodynamic psychotherapy can promote deep healing and personal growth.

ABOUT US
Why Work With Kaleidoscope Counselling Collective
Kristie Brassard
MSW, RSW
Our virtual LGBTQ+ affirming therapy & counselling clinic was built on the philosophy that we’re all imperfect humans with our own strengths and struggles – there are no bad parts of us, only steps to take in our personal journey to living authentically.
When you’re struggling with your emotions, feeling disconnected, or craving more meaning in your life, it can be hard to know what you need to start feeling better.

Questions About Therapy
Frequently Asked Questions About LGBTQ+ Therapy
What does 2SLGBTQIA+ stand for?
The acronym that represents the queer community has changed and shifted over the years, and it continues to evolve.
2S: Two-spirited people
L: Lesbian
G: Gay
B: Bisexual
T: Transgender
Q: Queer & Questioning
I: Intersex
A: Asexual
+: And all other labels that represent the community.
Are your clinicians LGBTQ+ affirming?
Yes, many of our clinicians identify as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, or they are allies. Supporting LGBTQ+ folks and allies is our passion, and the team is diverse in their cultural backgrounds, sexuality & gender identities. That being said, clients of all genders, sexual orientations, spiritual, and cultural backgrounds are welcome in our virtual office!
What types of issues or concerns can you help me with?
Everyone deserves a space to feel safe and understood. Our therapists offer compassionate support to individuals, families, and couples, including those who identify as LGBTQ+, with a wide range of concerns:
- Mental health challenges (anxiety, depression, etc.)
- Relationship issues and communication
- Gender and sexuality exploration
- Trauma recovery and healing
- Self-esteem and personal growth
- …and more.
How can therapy support someone who is questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity?
The queer identified members on our team have all had our own experiences with figuring out our authentic selves in a world where we’re expected to be heterosexual and cis-gendered. We bring our lived experience and professional expertise to each session, helping clients explore who they truly are, what they want and need, and how to overcome the barriers they face. We use various techniques to help clients get curious about themselves and explore who they are at their core, and connect with their “inner knowing”.
We never pressure our clients to share their truth unless that feels right for them to do so. We encourage self-expression in ways that feel safe and comfortable for our clients, and we support them every step of the way.
What therapeutic approaches do you use to support LGBTQ+ clients?
Our clinicians are all eclectic and client-centered in their approach. We use a variety of evidence-based and creative interventions, letting our clients and our intuition guide us.
