Queer Mental Health & LGBTQ+ Support: The Hard Truth π€―
Being part of the LGBTQ+ community can be amazing, but let’s be real, it can also be tough. Queer mental health and LGTBQ+ support options are important topics, as we often face unique challenges that can affect our well-being in ways that most people might not understand, and affirming support can be hard to access.
It’s Not Just You: The LBGTQ+ Mental Health Reality π
If you’ve ever felt like you’re struggling with your mental health, know that you’re not alone. Research shows that LGBTQ+ folks in Ontario, across Canada, and around the world, often deal with mental health issues more than others outside of the community and struggle to find the support they need. It’s not our fault, though. Things like discrimination, internalized homophobia/ transphobia, feeling like you don’t belong, social rejection, and/or the stress of coming out can take its toll.
What Does the Queer Mental Health Struggle Look Like? π€
Queer mental health challenges can show up in different ways. Some of us experience:
- Anxiety: That constant worry of what might happen, feeling unsafe or on edge.
- Depression: Feeling down, hopeless, worthless, or just not interested in things anymore.
- Substance Use & Problem Behaviours: Turning to drugs or alcohol to cope, self-harm, internet overuse, risky behaviors, etc. (which usually doesn’t help in the long run).
- Other Stuff: Trauma, body image struggles, and even thoughts of suicide are sadly more common for LGBTQ+ people.
The Situation in Our Communities Around Ontario π
The towns and cities in Ontario have come a long way, but there’s still room for improvement regarding queer mental health. It can be hard to find therapists or medical practitioners who truly get what we go through, we often still face discrimination and disadvantages. As well, if you live outside of a big city like Toronto, Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Hamilton, etc., it can be even harder to find the support you need.
